Adverse pregnancy outcome in rats following exposure to a Salacia reticulata (Celastraceae) root extract BJMBR
Ratnasooriya,W.D.; Jayakody,J.R.A.C.; Premakumara,G.A.S..
The root extract of Salacia reticulata Wight (family: Celastraceae) is used in Sri Lanka by traditional practitioners as a herbal therapy for glycemic control even during pregnancy. It is recognized that some clinically used antidiabetic drugs have harmful effects on pregnancy but the effects of the S. reticulata root extract on reproductive outcome is unknown and deserves examination. We determined the effects of the S. reticulata root extract on the reproductive outcome of Wistar rats (250-260 g) when administered orally (10 g/kg) during early (days 1-7) and mid- (days 7-14) pregnancy. The root extract significantly (P<0.05) enhanced post-implantation losses (control vs treatment: early pregnancy, 4.7 ± 2.4 vs 49.3 ± 13%; mid-pregnancy, 4.7 ± 2.4 vs...

Alternative parameterizations of relatedness in whole genome association analysis of pre-weaning traits of Nelore-Angus calves Genet. Mol. Biol.
Riley,David G.; Gill,Clare A.; Herring,Andy D.; Riggs,Penny K.; Sawyer,Jason E.; Sanders,James O..
Gestation length, birth weight, and weaning weight of F2 Nelore-Angus calves (n = 737) with designed extensive full-sibling and half-sibling relatedness were evaluated for association with 34,957 SNP markers. In analyses of birth weight, random relatedness was modeled three ways: 1) none, 2) random animal, pedigree-based relationship matrix, or 3) random animal, genomic relationship matrix. Detected birth weight-SNP associations were 1,200, 735, and 31 for those parameterizations respectively; each additional model refinement removed associations that apparently were a result of the built-in stratification by relatedness. Subsequent analyses of gestation length and weaning weight modeled genomic relatedness; there were 40 and 26 trait-marker associations...

Behaviour and growth performance of low-birth-weight piglets cross-fostered in multiparous sows with piglets of higher birth weights Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Souza,L.P.; Fries,H.C.C.; Heim,G.; Faccin,J.E.; Hernig,L.F.; Marimon,B.T.; Bernardi,M.L.; Bortolozzo,F.P.; Wentz,I..
The aim of the study was to evaluate the behaviour, pre-weaning survival rate and growth performance of low birth weight (BW) piglets cross-fostered with piglets of higher weights. Piglets were transferred to 60 foster sows, and divided in three groups (G; n=20): G1- 12 low BW piglets (0.80 - 1.25kg); G2- six low BW piglets and six intermediate BW piglets (1.40 - 1.60kg), and G3- six low BW piglets and six high BW piglets (>1.70kg). For the analysis, groups G2 and G3 were subdivided in LG2 (six G2 light piglets); IG2 (six G2 intermediate piglets), LG3 (six G3 light piglets), and HG3 (six G3 heavy piglets). Behavioural observations were carried out on days 1, 2, 4 and 6 (visual direct observation) and on days 3 and 5 (video recording) after birth. The...

Birth weight patterns by gestational age in Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Pedreira,Carlos E.; Pinto,Francisco A.; Pereira,Silvia P.; Costa,Elaine S..
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: We present an updated birth weight-for-gestational-age portrait, based on nearly 8 million observations of an ethnic-mixed population. It comprises the first comprehensive charts with Brazilian data. This contribution intends to assist clinicians in classifying fetal growth, to provide a reference for investigations of predictors and to show the consequences of small and large patterns for gestational age delivery. Most of the reference data for assessing birth weight for gestational age deal with insufficient sample size, especially at low gestational age. Population-based studies with considerably large sample size refer to data collected more than 15 years ago. METHODS: We accomplished a population-based study on births in all...

Effects of cytoplasmic inheritance on preweaning traits of Hereford cattle Genet. Mol. Biol.
Mezzadra,Carlos Alberto; Melucci,Lilia Magdalena; Corva,Pablo Marcelo; López Valiente,Sebastián; Rípoli,María Verónica; Lirón,Pedro; Giovambattista,Guillermo.
The influence of cytoplasmic inheritance on birth and weaning weight was evaluated in an experimental Hereford herd. Data on 1,720 records for birth and weaning weights from calves born between 1963 and 2002 were studied. Variance components were estimated using MTDFREML procedures and an animal model was fitted for each trait. Direct and maternal additive effects and permanent environment and maternal lineage effects were treated as random, while year and month of birth, age of dam and sex of the calf were treated as fixed. Identification of maternal lineages was based on pedigree information. The contribution to phenotypic variance of cytoplasmic lineages defined by pedigree information was negligible for both traits. Mitochondrial genotypes of cows...

Lysine supplementation in late gestation of gilts: effects on piglet birth weight, and gestational and lactational performance Ciência Rural
Magnabosco,Diogo; Bierhals,Thomas; Ribeiro,Renato Rosa; Cemin,Henrique Scherer; Faccin,Jamil Elias Ghiggi; Bernardi,Mari Lourdes; Wentz,Ivo; Bortolozzo,Fernando Pandolfo.
Lysine requirements for gain in maternal body reserves and piglet birth weight, during pregnancy, in contemporary prolific genotypes, are not well established. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of dietary lysine in late pregnancy on piglet birth weight, and on the gestational and lactational performance of gilts. Pregnant gilts were uniformly distributed into two groups and received, from 85 to 110 days of gestation, either of two lysine levels in their diet: Control group - 28g lysine/day (n=136), and Lysine group - 35g lysine/day (n=141). There were no effects (P>0.10) of supplemental lysine on body weight and backfat (BF) gain of females or on piglet birth weight. Gilts supplemented with lysine tended to have a lower percentage of stillbirths...

Microcirculation in obesity: an unexplored domain Anais da ABC (AABC)
Wiernsperger,Nicolas; Nivoit,Pierre; Bouskela,Eliete.
Obesity is traditionally linked to diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Very recent experimental, clinical and epidemiological, sometimes provocative, data challenge this automaticity by showing that not the amount but the distribution of fat is the important determinant. Moderate abdominal fat accumulation may thus be more harmful than even consequent overweight. In view of the worldwide burden of obesity, factors leading to it in children and young adults must urgently be identified. Since obesity is a very complex cardiometabolic situation, this will require to focus investigations on uncomplicated obese subjects and adequate animal models. The recent discovery of intergenerational transmissions of obesity risk factors and also the key role played by...

Quantitative trait locus affecting birth weight on bovine chromosome 5 in a F2 Gyr x Holstein population Genet. Mol. Biol.
Gasparin,Gustavo; Miyata,Marcelo; Coutinho,Luiz Lehmann; Martinez,Mário Luiz; Silva,Marcos Vinícius G. Barbosa da; Machado,Marco Antônio; Campos,Ana Lúcia; Regitano,Luciana Correia de Almeida.
Segregation between a genetic marker and a locus influencing a quantitative trait in a well delineated population is the basis for success in mapping quantitative trait loci (QTL). To detect bovine chromosome 5 (BTA5) birth weight QTL we genotyped 294 F2 Gyr (Bos indicus) x Holstein (Bos taurus) crossbreed cattle for five microsatellite markers. A linkage map was constructed for the markers and an interval analysis for the presence of QTL was performed. The linkage map indicated differences in the order of two markers relative to the reference map (<A HREF="http://www.marc.usda.gov/">http://www.marc.usda.gov</A>). Interval analysis detected a QTL controlling birth weight (p < 0.01) at 69 centimorgans (cM) from the most centromeric marker...
